Trip to London
London, Europe · LON
London operates at its own pace, a sprawling metropolis that feels more like a collection of villages than a single city. Unlike Paris's grand avenues or Rome's ancient core, London offers a more eclectic experience. Its dominant rhythm is one of constant movement, a blend of tradition and relentless innovation. The atmosphere shifts dramatically from the polished elegance of Mayfair to the bohemian buzz of Camden. It’s a city that rewards exploration, where a short walk can reveal centuries of history tucked away behind modern facades.
Neighborhoods to know
Shoreditch
Once gritty, now a hub for street art, independent boutiques, and tech startups. It's packed with trendy bars and restaurants, especially around Brick Lane. Visit during the week for a more relaxed vibe, or on weekends for a lively atmosphere. Expect slightly higher prices for food and drink compared to other areas, but the unique atmosphere is worth it.
Notting Hill
Famous for its pastel-coloured houses and Portobello Road Market, this area exudes charm. It attracts shoppers, foodies, and those seeking a picturesque London experience. Saturdays are busiest due to the market. Prices for accommodation and dining can be on the higher side, reflecting its popularity and desirable postcode.
South Bank
This cultural corridor along the Thames is alive with street performers, galleries, and iconic landmarks like the Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. It's a fantastic area for a stroll, particularly on sunny days, offering great views. Food options range from casual riverside cafes to more formal restaurants, with prices varying accordingly.
Hampstead
Offering a village-like feel with its leafy streets and sprawling Heath, Hampstead is a retreat from the city bustle. It’s ideal for leisurely walks and exploring independent shops and cafes. While it offers a more serene experience, dining and shopping can be pricey. Best enjoyed on a clear day for Heath walks.
Brixton
Known for its vibrant market, diverse community, and lively music scene, Brixton offers a more raw and energetic London experience. Explore the covered market for international food stalls and unique goods. It’s a great place to eat affordably and soak up a multicultural atmosphere, especially on weekends.

When to go to London
London is a year-round destination, but spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer the most pleasant weather, with average temperatures ranging from 10°C to 18°C. Summer (June-August) is warmer but also the busiest and most expensive, with average highs around 22°C. Winters (December-February) are chilly, averaging 5°C, with shorter daylight hours. The Christmas period sees festive markets and decorations, making it popular despite the cold. The August bank holiday period can also be busy.
Eating out
Dishes to try
- Fish and Chips: A classic British meal featuring battered and deep-fried fish (usually cod or haddock) served with thick-cut fries. Best enjoyed from a traditional 'chippy'.
- Sunday Roast: A traditional meal served on Sundays, typically consisting of roasted meat (beef, lamb, chicken, or pork) with roasted potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables, and gravy. Widely available in pubs.
- Full English Breakfast: A hearty breakfast comprising bacon, eggs, sausages, baked beans, fried bread, and often grilled tomatoes and mushrooms. A popular choice in cafes and hotels.
Where to eat
For diverse and affordable eats, head to Borough Market near London Bridge for gourmet street food and artisanal products, or explore the vibrant stalls of Brixton Village Market for Caribbean and international flavours. Brick Lane in Shoreditch is famous for its numerous curry houses, offering competitive prices, especially for set menus. Expect to spend between 15€-25€ for a main meal in these areas.
Getting around
From the airport
From Heathrow (LHR), the Piccadilly Line on the Underground is the cheapest option at about 6€, taking around 50-60 minutes to central London. The Heathrow Express train offers a faster journey (15-20 minutes) to Paddington but costs significantly more, around 25€. Gatwick (LGW) is served by the Gatwick Express (around 30€, 30 minutes) or slower Southern/Thameslink trains (around 15€, 45-60 minutes).
In the city
London's public transport is efficient, primarily using the Underground (the 'Tube') and buses. A contactless bank card or an Oyster card is essential for the best fares. A single Tube journey within Zone 1-2 costs around 2.50€ (off-peak) to 3.50€ (peak). Daily capping limits the maximum you'll spend, typically around 8.50€ for Zones 1-2. Buses are cheaper, around 1.70€ per journey. Walking is excellent for exploring specific neighbourhoods.
Local culture & tips
Londoners tend to be reserved but polite; a simple 'please' and 'thank you' go a long way. Queuing is an art form – always wait your turn patiently. Tipping isn't obligatory in restaurants as service charges are often included (check your bill, usually 12.5%), but rounding up or adding a small amount for exceptional service is appreciated. Pubs are central to social life; don't be afraid to order at the bar. While generally safe, be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded tourist areas, and keep valuables secure. Most shops close around 18:00, though larger ones and those in central areas stay open later.
How long to stay in London?
We recommend at least 4 days on site to enjoy London without rushing. Add 1-2 extra days if you're pairing it with another Europe stop. For a short city-break, 3 days already cover the highlights.

Travel budget in London
A daily budget of approximately 138€ per person is a reasonable estimate for a comfortable mid-range trip. This breaks down roughly to 80€ for accommodation (a decent hotel outside the absolute centre), 40€ for food (a mix of casual meals, one pub dinner, and coffee breaks), and 18€ for local transport (multiple Tube/bus journeys). A frugal traveller could manage on 70-80€ by staying in hostels (around 30€), eating from markets and supermarkets (20€), and relying heavily on walking and limited public transport (10€). For a more comfortable experience, expecting 200€+ allows for higher-end hotels, fine dining, and more paid attractions.
