Trip to Nice

Nice, Europe · NCE

Nice, the capital of the French Riviera, offers a distinct blend of Italianate charm and French sophistication, setting it apart from its glitzier neighbours like Cannes. Its pace is decidedly Mediterranean – lively in the mornings and evenings, with a more relaxed midday lull. The dominant ambiance is one of sophisticated leisure, best experienced by strolling along its iconic Baie des Anges or getting lost in the colourful maze of Vieux Nice. It's a city that invites you to slow down, savour the sunlight, and appreciate the beauty of the sea meeting the mountains.

Neighborhoods to know

Vieux Nice (Old Town)

This is the historic heart, a labyrinth of narrow, pastel-hued streets alive with the buzz of restaurants, artisan shops, and local life. It's best explored on foot, especially in the morning before the crowds, or in the evening for dinner. Expect slightly higher prices for souvenirs but authentic Niçois cuisine is readily available. It's where you'll feel the city's oldest pulse.

Promenade des Anglais

The iconic seafront lung of Nice, this wide boulevard is lined with palm trees and grand hotels. It's perfect for a leisurely walk or bike ride at any time, though sunset offers particularly stunning views. While hotels here are pricier, enjoying the sea breeze and people-watching is free. It connects many key areas and offers constant access to the Mediterranean.

Cimiez

Perched on a hill north of the centre, Cimiez is an elegant residential district known for its Roman ruins, Matisse Museum, and beautiful gardens. It's quieter than the old town, ideal for a peaceful afternoon visit, especially to the archaeological site. Access is best by bus or a brisk uphill walk. Prices for amenities are standard for residential areas.

Port Lympia

This vibrant area surrounds the bustling harbour, filled with yachts and fishing boats. It has a more local feel than the Promenade, with good seafood restaurants and a lively market. It's great for an evening stroll or a meal with a view of the water. Prices are moderate, particularly for seafood enjoyed near the port.

Le Carré d'Or

The 'Golden Square' is Nice's upscale shopping district, centred around Avenue Jean Médecin. It's characterized by grand Haussmannian architecture and high-end boutiques. While not a place for budget shopping, it's interesting for window-shopping and people-watching, and offers more standard-priced eateries a few streets back from the main avenues.

Top attractions

Promenade des Anglais

This famous seaside promenade stretches for 7km along the Baie des Anges. It's perfect for walking, cycling, or simply sitting and enjoying the view. Free to access. Best enjoyed in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday sun and peak crowds.

Colline du Château (Castle Hill)

Offers panoramic views of the city, port, and Baie des Anges. Features a waterfall and park. Free entry. Take the lift (approx. 2€) or walk up the stairs (around 15 minutes from the Old Town).

Vieux Nice Markets (Cours Saleya)

A vibrant flower and produce market (mornings, Tue-Sun) and an antiques market (Mondays). Free to wander. Sample local produce or enjoy the atmosphere. Arrive early for the best selection and fewer crowds.

Located in Cimiez, showcasing the artist's work spanning his career. Admission is around 10€. Closed Tuesdays. Consider combining with a visit to the nearby Roman ruins.

Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate

The main cathedral in Vieux Nice, with an impressive Baroque interior. Free to enter, though donations are appreciated. A moment of quiet reflection amidst the bustling old town.

Russian Orthodox Cathedral

A stunning example of Russian architecture outside Russia. Admission is 7€. Located a short walk from the city centre. Best visited during daylight hours for photography.

When to go to Nice

The shoulder seasons, April-May and September-October, offer the best balance. Expect pleasant temperatures, around 15-22°C, with plenty of sunshine and fewer crowds than the peak summer months (July-August). Summer can be hot (25-30°C+) and crowded, with accommodation prices soaring. Winter (December-February) is mild (10-15°C) but can be rainy; it's the quietest period, ideal for budget travellers. Nice hosts various events, including Carnival in February and the Jazz Festival in July.

Eating out

Dishes to try

  • Socca: A thin, chickpea flour pancake, crispy on the outside and soft inside, seasoned with pepper. It's a classic street food, best eaten hot straight from the oven.
  • Salad Niçoise: A hearty salad featuring tuna, hard-boiled eggs, tomatoes, olives, anchovies, and green beans, traditionally dressed with olive oil. Variations exist, but the core ingredients remain.
  • Pissaladière: A tart with a bread-like base, topped with caramelized onions, anchovies, and black olives. It's savoury and satisfying, a staple of Niçois cuisine.

Where to eat

For authentic Niçois fare, head to Vieux Nice, particularly around Rue Droite and Rue du Pérou. The Cours Saleya area also has many options, though some are more tourist-focused. Expect to pay around 15-25€ for a main dish in a traditional restaurant, with socca or pissaladière available for 4-7€ as street food or starters. Explore the side streets for better value and more local experiences.

Getting around

From the airport

Nice Côte d'Azur Airport (NCE) is well-connected. The Tram Line 2 (approx. 1.50€, 30-40 minutes) runs directly from Terminals 1 and 2 to the city centre (e.g., Jean Médecin stop). Taxis are available but significantly more expensive, costing around 30-50€ for a trip into the city centre.

In the city

Nice has an efficient public transport network, primarily trams and buses operated by Lignes d'Azur. A single ticket ('Solo' ticket) costs 1.70€ and is valid for 74 minutes. A 10-journey card ('Carnet') is 15€. Consider a 7-day pass for 20€ if staying longer. Walking is excellent for exploring Vieux Nice and the Promenade des Anglais. Bike-sharing services are also available.

Local culture & tips

Niçois culture embraces a relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle. Meal times are typically later than in Northern Europe; lunch around 13:00 and dinner starting from 19:30 or 20:00. Tipping is not obligatory in restaurants where service is included (service compris), but rounding up the bill or leaving a small amount (5-10%) for excellent service is appreciated. While generally safe, be aware of pickpockets in crowded areas like markets and public transport. French is the primary language, though English is widely spoken in tourist areas.

How long to stay in Nice?

We recommend at least 4 days on site to enjoy Nice without rushing. Add 1-2 extra days if you're pairing it with another Europe stop. For a short city-break, 3 days already cover the highlights.
